Introduction to server-level users
There are two occasions when users may need to enter a username and password to log into an Asta Powerproject client:
- To log into the Enterprise server.
- To log into an Asta Powerproject project.
Users log into the Enterprise server as a server-level user; they log into an Asta Powerproject project as a project-level user. These are the two levels of user within the Asta Enterprise system. The way in which you use server-level and project-level users depends on the way in which you organise your projects and the way in which you want to restrict access to them.
Users only need to log on to the Enterprise server if you have set up server-level users in Server Admin. If no server-level users have been created in Server Admin, all users can start the Asta Powerproject client software without logging in. They are logged in automatically with the username 'Admin', without seeing the Login dialog.
Once a user has started the Asta Powerproject client and has connected to the server, they may need to log in when they open a project. They only have to do this if project-level users have been set up within the project. Setting up users within a project is described in the Asta Powerproject Help.
Whenever you create a new project, the server-level username you are using on the server is automatically transferred into the project, and becomes the first project-level username in the project. If no server-level users have been created, this is set to 'Admin' for all users.
When any user opens a project, they are logged into the project using their server-level username, if that username also exists as a project-level username. If a user is logged in as 'Admin', and the project was created by a another user who was logged in as 'Admin', they are logged straight into the project without seeing the Login dialog.
If you use the Active Directory® service to manage the users on your network, you can configure the Asta Enterprise system to allow users to log into data sources and projects automatically, using the security and access control provided by Active Directory. Configuring the Asta Enterprise system to use Active Directory means that users do not have to enter user names and passwords when they log into their projects.
