Specifying a server-level user's access rights
You can restrict the access that users have to projects in two ways:
In Server Admin, you can specify which server-level users have access to which data sources. If you have not set up any server-level users, everyone has access to all data sources.
To specify a server-level user's access to data sources:
- In the left-hand pane, select the user whose access to data sources you want to restrict. All the data sources on the server are listed in the right-hand pane.
- In the right-hand pane, select the data sources to which the user requires access. Data sources to which the user has access are indicated by a check mark. The user can now access those data sources, but is denied access to data sources that are not checked.
In the Asta Powerproject client, you can use security groups to specify whether users have complete access to projects, or restricted access. You can restrict access to some parts of a project by making it read-only, but leave complete access to other parts of a project. For example, a Project Manager may have edit access to the whole project, while a Foreman may only have read-only access to the sections of the project that affect him and his team. Restricting access within projects is described in the Asta Powerproject Help.
If a user has access to the appropriate external database application, for example Microsoft Access®, they will be able to open a data source in that application irrespective of their Server Admin or Asta Powerproject access rights to the data source or its projects. You may need to set up additional security measures in your database application to prevent unauthorised users from accessing sensitive material in this way.
If your Enterprise server is configured to allow remote access, for example via the Internet, you can also specify the server-level users that have remote administrative access to the Enterprise server.
