Introduction to Enterprise server operation
In routine use, the Enterprise server is very easy to operate. After you have started the Enterprise server, you can leave it running all the time. You only need to shut it down when you want to use Server Admin to add or maintain user-defined enumerators, user-defined fields and user-defined tables.
You can control the Enterprise server by typing commands at the Enterprise server command prompt. For example, there are commands for sending messages to the clients, for purging the data left by crashed clients and for shutting down the server.
If the server is running, you cannot make any changes to data sources that are currently mounted within Server Admin, but you can add new data sources. If you add a new data source while the server is running, enter refresh datasources at the Enterprise server command prompt to mount the new data source.
If the server is running and you change the server location method, enter publish at the Enterprise server command prompt to republish the server.
If you have installed the server as a service, you must first use the Controller application to display a window for the server in which you can enter commands.
It is possible to set up and run more than one Enterprise server on a machine. You may wish to do this in order to allow greater throughput where large quantities of data are being used.
