Using the Enterprise server as a service

You can choose to install the Enterprise server as a service, although this is not essential. If it is installed as a service, the Enterprise server is loaded when Windows® starts, and runs in the background.

When the Enterprise server has been installed as a service, it has no user interface. If you want to enter server commands, you first need to use the Controller application to display a window for the Enterprise server.

To start the Controller application:

  1. At a command prompt, use the CD command to change to the folder in which the server is installed.
  2. Enter the command line to start the controller, for example, controller -tray main_SERVER Admin Password. A server window is displayed into which you can type Enterprise server commands.

The complete syntax for the Controller command is:

controller [-tray] <servername> [<username>[<password>]]

where items in square brackets are optional and those in angle brackets are mandatory.

Entering a username is only optional in that you do not need to enter a username if no server-level users have been set up. If there are server-level users, you must enter a username. Only those users with remote administrative access to the server can access the server in this way. This provides a way of preventing unauthorised access to the server.

The -tray parameter refers to the system tray. If you include this parameter, an icon for the Controller application appears on the Windows task bar next to the clock.
