Shutting down the Enterprise server

You can leave the Enterprise server running all the time so that it is always available to the clients. You only need to shut it down when you want to use Server Admin to add or maintain user-defined enumerators, user-defined fields and user-defined tables.

To shut down the Enterprise server, enter shutdown at the Enterprise server command prompt, followed by the number of minutes in which you want the server to shut down. For example, if you want the server to shut down in five minutes, enter shutdown 5.

The following messages are displayed:

  • Logins are disabled.
  • Shutting down in 10 minutes.

Logins are disabled as soon as you start the shutdown procedure, preventing any more users from logging onto the Enterprise server. Each minute, another message is displayed, reporting the number of minutes until the Enterprise server terminates. A message is also sent to every client, notifying them that the server is about to close.

You can also shut down the Enterprise server using the exit command. Using the exit command, the Enterprise server is terminated immediately, without the clients being warned first.

If you have installed the server as a service, you must first use the Controller application to display a window for the server before you can shut it down
