Starting the Enterprise server with a specific name

Unless you explicitly give it a name, the Enterprise server is given a default name when it starts, which is derived from the PC on which the server is running. The default name is in two parts and comprises the name of the user who is logged onto Windows®, and the name of the computer. For example, andy_ADMIN1 indicates that the user Andy is logged onto a computer called ADMIN1.

It is good practice to specify a name for the server which is more meaningful for the users.

To start the Enterprise server with a specific name:

  1. Launch a command prompt and use the cd command to change to the folder in which the server is installed.
  2. Enter the following command at the command prompt to run the server:

    astapowerproject-enterprise -server_id <server identification number> <servername>

For example, astapowerproject-enterprise -server_id 1 Project_Server starts the Enterprise server with the server identification number 1 and with the name Project_Server.

If you want to include spaces in the server name, enclose the server name in double quotation marks. If you use Archive Manager to archive historic data from your projects, remember to append -web to the command you use to start the Enterprise server.

If you have set up more than one Enterprise server on a machine, you always start the server with a specific name, to differentiate it from the other server(s) you are running.

If you have installed the server as a service and you want it to start with a specific name, you must reinstall the server as a service manually and specify a name.
