To access the Options dialog, click the File tab, then click Options.

Field | Description |
---|---|
Update duration in step |
Click this radio button if you want the duration percentage progress of tasks to be increased proportionally when you enter overall percentage progress.
|
Fill to progress line |
Click this radio button if you want tasks to be progressed up to the report date of the appropriate progress period when you enter overall percentage progress.
|
Do not recompute remaining after overall percent update |
Select this check box to specify that the duration remaining of tasks should not be recalculated when you enter overall percentage progress against a task that differs from the duration percentage progress, or clear the check box to specify that the duration remaining of tasks should be increased or decreased accordingly. This check box applies only when the Fill to progress line radio button is clicked.
|
Snap actual/remaining duration to snapping unit |
Select this check box if you want duration percentage progress and the remaining duration of tasks to snap to a specific time unit when it is updated as a result of you entering overall percentage progress, or clear the check box if you want the duration percentage progress to be applied to tasks and allocations precisely. For example, you may want the completed section and the remaining section of tasks to snap to the nearest hour or day.

Enter Progress shows 'User Percent Complete' |
Select this check box if you want to display the User row on the Task and Allocation tabs of the Enter Progress dialog, or clear the check box if you want to omit this row from the dialog.
This method of recording progress has been superceded by the overall percentage complete functionality. |
In Progress from allocations, recalculate durations where allocation is calculated |
If more than one resource is allocated to a task and one resource has reported some progress in a progress period while another has reported no progress, you can specify whether you want the reschedule to recalculate the duration of the allocation of the resource that has reported no progress in order to prevent the duration of the task from being extended.
This is illustrated below. The first illustration shows a week long task to which two resources have been allocated. Resource 1 has an allocation of 1.00, while Resource 2 has not been fully-allocated to the task; it has an allocation of 0.6.
If the above project is rescheduled so that the progress line in the illustration is straightened, the default outcome is as follows:
The allocation of Resource 2 has been moved to the right of the progress date and the duration of the allocation has not been changed, despite the fact that as Resource 2 was only partially-allocated to the task, the resource could still complete the task sooner if they spent all of their time on the task in the next progress period. This has resulted in the duration of the task being increased.
If you specify that the duration of allocations should be recalculated in situations such as this, the outcome of the reschedule would be as follows:
As before, the allocation of Resource 2 has been moved to the right of the progress date. However, here, the allocation of Resource 2 has been changed from 0.60 to 1.00 and the duration of the allocation reduced accordingly, to reflect the fact that the resource can complete the task sooner if they spend all of their time on the task in the next progress period. This has resulted in the duration of the task remaining the same as it was prior to the reschedule.
Select this check box to specify that the duration and allocation of allocations should be recalculated in situations such as those illustrated above, or clear the check box to specify that the duration and allocation of such allocations should not be recalculated, potentially resulting in a later finish date for the tasks in question.
Note that this check box only affects allocations against tasks that have more than one resource allocation, where at least one allocation has some progress reported against it, in which the allocation figure is calculable, and that are longer than at least one other allocation on the same task. |
Update progress via duration remaining |
This check box determines what happens if you edit a task's duration remaining in the spreadsheet.
If you clear this check box, when you edit a task's duration remaining in the spreadsheet, the overall duration of the task is increased or decreased and the actual duration remains unchanged. For example, with a 12 day task with 4d actual duration and 8d duration remaining, if you changed the duration remaining to 5d, the overall duration of the task would be reduced to 9d and the actual duration would remain unchanged at 4d.
If you select this check box, what happens when you edit a task's duration remaining in the spreadsheet depends on which radio button you have selected in the Progress entry mode group on this dialog:
Note that this check box affects only the editing of tasks' duration remaining in the spreadsheet. |
Maintain allocation profiles on progress |
This check box determines the way in which effort, quantity or cost is distributed in completed sections when progress is applied to nonlinear allocations - ie one to which a resource curve or individual allocation profile has been assigned.
If you select this check box, when you apply progress to a nonlinear allocation, the effort, quantity or cost in the completed section is distributed according to the resource curve or allocation profile that has been assigned to the allocation, and the profile on the Nonlinear Assignment tab of the Resource Properties dialog displays correct values for the completed section.
If you clear this check box, when you apply progress to a nonlinear allocation, although the completed section contains the correct total planned effort, quantity or cost, the effort, quantity or cost is not distributed according to the resource curve or allocation profile; the completed section contains average values, and the profile on the Nonlinear Assignment tab of the Resource Properties dialog displays zero values for the completed section.

Progress method |
Choose whether progress on summary
In very large projects, you may find that progress calculations take a long time. You can speed things up by selecting an 'approximate' method; you can speed things up even further by selecting 'None' in this field to disable progress calculations for parent tasks. If you do this, parent tasks do not display progress at all.

How do I...

Click the Update duration in step radio button if you want the duration percentage complete progress of tasks to be increased proportionally when you enter overall percentage complete progress, or click the Fill to progress line radio button if you want tasks to be progressed up to the report date of the appropriate progress period when you enter overall percentage complete progress.
If you have clicked Fill to progress line, select the Do not recompute remaining after overall percent update check box to specify that the duration remaining of tasks should not be recalculated when you enter overall percentage progress against a task that differs from the duration percentage progress, or clear the check box to specify that the duration remaining of tasks should be increased or decreased accordingly.

Select the Snap actual/remaining duration to snapping unit check box if you would like the duration percentage complete progress and the remaining duration of tasks to snap to a specific time unit, or clear the check box if you want the duration percentage complete progress to be applied to tasks and allocations precisely. Select the time unit to which you want duration percentage complete progress to snap in the Progress snapping unit field.

Click the Use current baseline radio button to make views display information from the current baseline when they are displayed in 'jagged progress' mode, or click the Use project baseline(s) radio button to make them display information from project baselines - ie different baselines that have been associated with individual projects in a portfolio.
Note that these radio buttons are greyed-out if one or more open views are currently in 'jagged progress' mode. You must close any 'jagged progress' views before using these radio buttons.

Click the Duration percent complete field to specify that these controls update the progress of tasks and allocations as a percentage of their duration, or click the Overall percent complete field to specify that they update progress as an overall percentage complete, a measurement that is independent of the duration.

Select the Enter progress shows 'User Percent Complete' check box if you want to display the User row on the Task and Allocation tabs of the Enter Progress dialog, or clear the check box if you want to omit this row from the dialog.

Select the In Progress from allocations, recalculate durations where allocation is calculated check box to specify that the duration and allocation of allocations should be recalculated in such situations, or clear the check box to specify that the duration and allocation of such allocations should not be recalculated, potentially resulting in a later finish date for the tasks in question.

Select the Update progress via duration remaining check box if you want the actual duration to be increased when you edit a task's duration remaining in the spreadsheet, or clear the check box to specify that you want the overall duration of tasks to be increased or decreased and the actual duration to remain unchanged.

Select the Maintain allocation profiles on progress check box if you want the effort, quantity or cost in the completed section to be distributed according to the resource curve or allocation profile that has been assigned to the allocation when you apply progress to nonlinear allocations, or clear the check box to specify that you want the completed section to contain average values, rather than for the effort, quantity or cost to be distributed according to the resource curve or allocation profile.
