Calculating progress as a percentage of task duration
You may wish to enter and display progress as a percentage of the duration of a task. For example, if 40% of a task has been completed, you can record that the task is 40% complete, meaning that 60% of the task remains to be completed. This is a simple method of calculating progress, and one in which the progress of a task is always linked to the task's duration. Changes to the actual or remaining duration will change the duration percentage complete value.
Calculating progress in this way is most useful if you assign resources to your tasks, as it allows you to record progress on tasks as a percentage of task duration and on allocations as a percentage of effort. If you do not assign resources to your tasks, or if you want to record progress in a way that is independent to the duration of a task, you may find it useful to calculate progress as an overall percentage complete.
To mark progress on a task as a percentage of task duration, record progress in the Duration percent row on the Task tab of the Enter Progress dialog.
If the Duration percent complete radio button is selected on the Progress tab of the Options dialog, you can also mark progress as a percentage of task duration using the controls on the Ribbon and the Object Edit toolbar, and in the Percent complete field when it is displayed in the spreadsheet.
To mark progress on an allocation as a percentage of effort, record progress in the Percent row on the Allocation tab of the Enter Progress dialog.
