Calculating progress as an overall percentage complete
You may wish to enter and display progress as an overall percentage complete, a measurement that is independent of the duration of a task. For example, if a task is planned to take 10 days and 5 days have elapsed but only 20% of the task work has been done, you can record that the task is 20% overall complete, even though it is 50% complete when progress is viewed as a percentage of the task duration. Changes to the actual or remaining duration will not change the overall percentage complete value.
Calculating progress in this way is most useful if you do not assign resources to your tasks. If you do assign resources to your tasks, you may find it useful to calculate progress as a percentage of task duration.
To mark progress on a task as an overall percentage complete, record progress in the Overall percent row on the Task tab of the Enter Progress dialog, or add a column to the spreadsheet containing the Overall percent complete field and enter the value into the column.
If the Overall percent complete radio button is selected on the Progress tab of the Options dialog, you can also mark progress as an overall percentage complete using the controls on the Ribbon and the Object Edit toolbar, and in the Percent complete field when it is displayed in the spreadsheet.
