Using Asta Connect with Asta Powerproject and Microsoft Project
You can use Asta Connect on its own to manage your projects, or you can use it in conjunction with another project management application, such as Asta Powerproject or Microsoft Project.
If you use Asta Connect with Asta Powerproject, the basic workflow involves using Asta Powerproject to create and plan your project - or 'master schedule' - then using Asta Connect to add detail to the project and record progress, passing progress information from Asta Connect to Asta Powerproject periodically as the project progresses.
To use Asta Connect with Asta Powerproject, follow this suggested workflow:
- Use Asta Powerproject to create and plan your master schedule - known as a 'project' in Asta Powerproject.
- In Asta Powerproject, use the Asta Connect export add-in to export the project in JSON format.
- In Asta Connect, import the JSON format file as a project.
- Use Asta Connect to add detail to the project, by creating pull plans, recording details of your project teams, adding tasks associated with the pull plan activities and recording progress against the tasks.
- In Asta Connect, periodically export data from the project in JSON format. For example, you may want to do this at the end of each week. You can export data relating to the whole project, or data relating to a single pull plan.
When you export data from a project for use in Asta Powerproject, the only information that is exported is progress that has been recorded against pull plan tasks that are linked to master plan activities. All other information that you have recorded in Asta Connect is excluded from the export. - In Asta Powerproject, open the project that is your master schedule and use the Asta Connect import add-in to import progress information from the JSON format file.
- In Asta Powerproject, reschedule and revise the project as required, using the latest progress data from Asta Connect.
- Repeat steps 4 to 7 as required as the project progresses.
You can use Microsoft Project to create and plan your project - or 'master schedule', then export the project so that it can be imported into Asta Connect as a new project. However, it is not possible to maintain a project in Microsoft Project and use Asta Connect to add detail to the project and record progress, then pass information backwards and forwards between the two applications periodically as the project progresses.
To use Asta Connect with Microsoft Project, follow this suggested workflow:
- Use Microsoft Project to create and plan your master schedule - known as a 'project' in Microsoft Project.
- In Microsoft Project, export the project in XML format.
- In Asta Connect, import the XML file as a project.
- Use Asta Connect to add detail to the project, by creating pull plans, recording details of your project teams, adding tasks associated with the pull plan activities and recording progress against the tasks.
