Reassigning allocations in RBS and CBS views by dragging
You can change an existing allocation of one resource or cost centre for another in RBS and CBS views by dragging an allocation from one resource or cost centre and dropping it onto a line that relates to a different resource or cost centre.
To reassign an allocation in an RBS or CBS view from one resource or cost centre to another:
- Display an RBS or CBS view that shows the allocation that you want to reassign and the allocations of the resource or cost centre to which you want to reassign the allocation. You can do this by CTRL-clicking the resources or cost centres in the project view, then right-clicking one of them and selecting Open RBS or Open CBS. The illustration below shows an RBS view containing the allocations of two resources: Alex Lee and John Langley:
- Click the mouse pointer over the allocation that you want to reassign and - holding the mouse button down - drag the allocation onto one of the lines that relates to the resource or cost centre to which you want to reassign the allocation. In the illustration below, the Plot 2 allocation is being dragged from the John Langley resource onto one of the Alex Lee resource's lines:
- Dark blue shading appears in the line to indicate the area in which the allocation can be dropped. This shading indicates the extent of the parent task, and will be the same duration as the allocation unless the allocation is shorter than the task. If you position the mouse pointer away from this blue shading, the cursor changes to indicate that you cannot drop the allocation in the current position:
- Position the allocation over the shaded portion of the line, then release the mouse button. The allocation is dropped into the RBS or CBS of the resource or cost centre to which you have reassigned it, where it appears on a new line (unless the resource or cost centre's allocations are currently contracted):
Note that depending on the number of allocations in the resource or cost centres' RBS or CBS views, the new line on which the allocation is placed may not be instantly visible. However, the allocation remains selected once you have reassigned it, so provided you do not click anywhere else first, you can clickin the Editing group on the Home tab to bring the allocation into view.
If you want to copy an allocation of one resource or cost centre to another resource or cost centre, follow the instructions above, but hold down the CTRL key while dragging and dropping the allocation. This results in a copy of the allocation being added to the task in question, with only the resource or cost centre being different.

- You can only reassign uncompleted or partially-completed allocations; if you reassign a partially-completed allocation, only the uncompleted segment of the allocation is reassigned.
- If the allocation is shorter than the task, you can position it anywhere within the dark blue shading that indicates the extent of the parent task when reassigning; if you want to ensure that the allocation retains the original dates, hold down the ALT key when reassigning.
- The modelling parameters of an allocation may prevent you from moving it to a different date during reassignment.
- The dates of an allocation may be affected by the calendar and standard work of the resource to which you reassign it.
- If you want to reassign an allocation to a resource or cost centre that currently has no existing assignments, you can do this by choosing to display resources or cost centres with no assignments in RBS and CBS views.
