Marking progress directly on tasks and allocations

You can mark the amount by which tasks and allocations have progressed directly on the bar chart, using progress entry mode. When working in progress entry mode, you can click and drag the cursor over tasks and allocations to mark progress on them. You cannot use progress entry mode to mark progress on milestones.

To mark progress on a task or allocation in progress entry mode:

  1. On the Home tab, in the Progress group, click the Enter Progress dropdown and select Progress Entry Mode.
  2. Hold the cursor over a task or allocation until you see the progress entry mode cursor cursor.
  3. Click and drag over the task or allocation to mark the progress. The amount of progress is displayed as you drag.
  4. Release the mouse button when you have marked the correct amount of progress.

Progress entry mode is intended to be used to update the duration percentage complete of tasks, rather than the overall percentage complete. For this reason, when you mark progress in this way, the progress line stays jagged and does not straighten, and the task is not extended or condensed when you release the mouse button, even if you have clicked the Fill to progress line radio button on the Progress tab of the Options dialog.

If a task has one or more task activities, the only way to mark progress against it is by marking progress against the task activities themselves - all other methods of marking progress are unavailable for such tasks.
