Configuring special permissions for users
You use the Permissions dialog to apply special permissions to users. Each user's permissions are defined by the user roles that are assigned to them. However, you can also apply special permissions to a user record, which override the permissions that are defined by the user roles. This might be useful if you want to enable a user to do something that their user role does not normally allow them to do - perhaps on a temporary basis. Alternatively, you may want to prevent a user from doing something that their user role normally allows them to do.
To access the Permissions dialog:
- Click Administration in the left pane, then click Users. The Users page appears.
- Click a user in the list. The Edit User dialog appears.
- Click Permissions.
If you have edited any of the fields on the Edit User dialog, the Permissions button is unavailable. To make it available again you need to save your changes to the user record then re-enter the Edit User dialog.
The Permissions dialog displays all of the possible permissions that can be assigned to the user, with any permissions that are currently assigned to the user - either via their user roles or via special permissions - selected. You can make it easier to display the permissions you want by filtering the permissions that are displayed in the dialog. To do this, enter an alphanumeric string in the Search... field at the top of the dialog. The list of permissions is filtered instantly as you enter text into the field, so that it displays only permissions that contain the text you are entering. For example, to filter the list of permissions so that it shows only permissions that contain the word 'whiteboard', enter 'whiteboard' in the field.
To configure special permissions for a user:
- On the Permissions dialog, select the check box to the left of a permission to enable the user to perform it, or clear the check box to prevent them from performing it.
- Click Save to save any changes you have made to the user's special permissions. Your changes are saved and you are returned to the Users page.
To reset any special permissions that you have configured for a user, so that the user's permissions are defined only by their user roles, click Reset special permissions.
