Permanent Resource Properties dialog - Assignment tab
You use the Assignment tab of the
Permanent Resource Properties dialog to view and maintain default resource modelling details for the selected permanent resource. These defaults are applied to each allocation of the resource, and you can amend them for each individual allocation.
In addition to specifying default modelling details, you can specify whether the duration of allocations of this resource is always the same as the duration of the corresponding task, whether allocations of the resource should use the resource or task calendar by default, and whether the costs and income relating to this resource are excluded from any task cost calculations, including any roll-up costs on parent tasks. This may be useful if the cost or income is accounted for elsewhere in the project.
You also use this tab to specify whether the effort and allocation values of allocations of this resource should be constant throughout the duration of the allocation or whether they should vary, being calculated using either an individual profile or a resource curve. If you want to assign a resource curve to allocations of this resource by default, you select the resource curve on this tab.
If the permanent resource has more than one skill, you can select the skill under which you want to edit the permanent resource using the skill selector at the bottom of the dialog.

To access the Permanent Resource Properties dialog, right-click a permanent resource in Library Explorer or the project view and select Properties.

Field | Description |
---|---|
Modelling type |
|
Allocation |
Enter the default number of the resource to allocate, for example 3 programmers or 2 excavators.
If you edit the resource's default availability using either the Availability - Skill or the Availability - Resource field on the Details tab of this dialog with the result that the resource or skill availability is less than its default allocation, the figure in this field is updated automatically to ensure that the default allocation is not greater than the availability. You can amend the allocation figure subsequently to enter a higher number if you wish. |
Duration | Specify the default duration over which allocations of the resource will spread. |
Effort | Enter the default amount of effort that allocations of the resource will complete. |
Delay | Specify any delay to apply by default to allocations of the resource. For example, you may not want painters to start work until 2 days after the start of tasks. |
Calculated | Specify whether you want |
Balancing | Specify whether you want Asta Powerproject to adjust the allocation, effort, work or work rate by default when you resize allocations by dragging in the bar chart. Select None to fix the allocations and prevent them from changing. |
Use task calendar |
Select this check box to specify that allocations of the resource should use the calendars of the tasks to which they are assigned, or clear the check box to apply the resource's calendar to the allocations.
|
May be shorter than task |
By default, a task cannot be longer than its resource allocations, so you cannot allocate resources to a portion of a task and leave the rest of the task unallocated. You can change this default behaviour if you want.
Select this check box to specify that allocations of the resource can be shorter than the tasks to which they are assigned, enabling you to leave portions of tasks unallocated, or clear the check box to specify that the allocations must be the same length as the corresponding tasks.
|
Allocate proportionally | Select this check box to specify that allocations of the resource should be calculated to be the same duration as the tasks to which they are assigned, or clear the check box to determine the allocations' duration using resource modelling information. |
Contributes to activity effort |
Resource allocations that use the Effort on Allocation modelling method can contribute to the effort activity budget of tasks that also have Effort Activity Budget modelled allocations. You may want to do this to reduce the effort activity budget of a task by the amount of an Effort on Allocation modelled allocation, thus affecting the effort activity budgets of the Effort Activity Budget modelled allocations.
Select this check box to specify that allocations of the resource should contribute to the effort activity budget, or clear the check box to specify that the allocations should work independently from the effort activity budget on the corresponding tasks. This check box only has an effect on Effort On Allocation modelled resources.
Combining Effort on Allocation and Effort Activity Budget allocations |
Share effort |
Resource allocations that use the Effort on Allocation modelling method for which Duration is the calculated parameter can share effort with other similar resources at the point at which they are assigned to the task.
Select this check box to specify that allocations of the resource should share effort with allocations of other similar resources, or clear the check box to indicate that allocations should work independently from any other allocations on the corresponding tasks. This check box only has an effect on Effort On Allocation modelled resources for which Duration is the Calculated parameter.
Sharing effort between Effort on Allocation modelled resources |
Lead resource |
As an alternative to colouring tasks according to the codes that are assigned to them, you can configure Asta Powerproject to colour them with the appearance of the lead resource that is assigned to them.
Select this check box to specify that the resource should be considered the lead resource when it is assigned to tasks. If you select this check box, the Lead resource check box will be selected by default on the Details tab of the allocation's properties dialog and tasks to which this resource is assigned will be displayed with the same appearance as this resource, if you choose to colour tasks according to the appearance of their lead resource.
|
Combine work rate |
Select this check box to combine the work rate of this resource with the work rates of one or more other 'Work From Task' modelled resources. This is useful if you have two allocations of the same resource working together to complete a task. For example, you might have two roofers working together to tile a roof.
If you select this check box for two or more permanent resource allocations on a task, their work rates are combined for the purposes of resource modelling, provided that the allocations:
If you clear this check box, the work rate of this resource is never combined with that of other resources and the resource is considered to be working on its own.
Combining the work rates of multiple Work From Task modelled resources |
Recalc work rate on assign | Select this check box to specify that the balancing parameter (usually the Work Rate) of a Work From Task modelled resource should be recalculated when the resource is assigned to a task, or clear the check box to specify that the resource's calculated parameter (usually Allocation or Duration, but possibly Work Rate) should be calculated according to the task's duration. This check box is available only for resources that use the Work From Task modelling method. |
Work | Enter the default amount of work that allocations of the resource will complete, for example 200 bricks laid. This field is disabled unless you are using the Work On Allocation modelling method and work is not selected as either the Calculated parameter or Balancing parameter. |
Work from task factor | Enter the default factor by which the task work should be multiplied when using the Work From Task modelling method. For example, if 1 unit of task work requires an excavator to move 5 tonnes of earth, the factor would be 5. |
Rate type | Specify whether the Work rate is calculated as time per unit (for example hours per tonne of earth) or units per time unit (for example tonnes of earth per hour). |
Work rate | Enter the default amount of time (for example 1 hour per tonne of earth) or the amount of resource (for example 1 tonne of earth per hour). This field is disabled if Work rate is the Calculated parameter. |
Accounted for elsewhere | Select this check box to exclude the allocations' completed costs from any task cost calculations, including roll-up costs on parent tasks, or clear the check box to include the costs in such calculations. |
Linear | Click this radio button to specify that allocations of the resource should be flat - linear - ie that allocation and effort values should remain constant throughout the duration of the resource's allocations. |
Profile | Click this radio button to specify that allocation and effort values for allocations of the resource are not constant throughout the duration of the allocations, but are calculated using an individual profile that is built up using the values that you enter in the grid on the Nonlinear Allocation tab of the Permanent Allocation Properties dialog. |
Resource curve |
Click this radio button to specify that the allocation and effort values for allocations of the resource should not be constant throughout the duration of the allocations, but that they should be calculated using a resource curve.
Select the resource curve to apply to allocations of the resource in the field to the right of the radio button; click |
Zero duration appearance |
For each resource, you can specify a milestone appearance to apply by default to zero duration allocations - ie milestones. You may want to apply a different milestone appearance to each resource to help differentiate between the zero duration allocations of different resources. Select the shape to apply to zero duration allocations of the resource by default.
If you select a different milestone appearance in this field, a dialog appears asking if you want to update all existing allocations of this resource to use the new milestone appearance, or to leave existing allocations unchanged. |
How do I...
