Creating relationships between tasks

Once you have identified the tasks that make up a project, you create relationships between tasks by drawing links from one task to another. In order to link tasks, you must have a detailed knowledge of the project. If you did not link tasks together, you would not know when tasks have to be performed. For example, two tasks A and B could take place in the following order:

Task A

Task B

Task A can take place before Task B

Or in the following order:

Task A

Task B

Task B can take place before Task A

But if Task B cannot start before Task A has finished, you can add a link between the tasks that defines the order in which they must be carried out and the timing of when each can start:

Task A

Task B

The second task cannot start until the first is complete

Task B cannot start until Task A has been completed

The task on which a link starts is known as the predecessor task, and the task on which a link ends is known as the successor task. In Asta Powerproject, each link has an arrowhead at one end. The arrowhead always points to the successor task, so you can see the direction of each link easily.
