Creating text annotations

Text annotations can contain text that you type via the keyboard, or information that is extracted from the project using fields. Typing a text annotation is the most common way of annotating a chart.

To create a text annotation:

  1. On the Format tab, in the Annotations group, click Text Annotation, then move the pointer over the bar chart. The cursor changes shape to indicate the way in which the annotation will be attached.
  2. When the cursor is the shape you want, hold down the left mouse button and drag. A dotted outline follows the pointer's movements, defining the size of the bounding box:

The bounding box displays the annotation size
  3. Release when the bounding box is the size that you want (you do not have to size the bounding box accurately because it will size to fit around the annotation text when you finish typing). A bounding box is drawn selected on the bar chart. The text insertion bar in the top left-hand corner of the bounding box indicates where text will appear when you begin to type.
  4. Type the text that you want in the annotation. The text automatically wraps around onto the next line. If you continue typing when the bounding box is full, the vertical scroll bar within the bounding box is enabled and scrolls automatically so that you can see the text as you enter it.
  5. When you have finished typing, click on the bar chart away from the bounding box or press CTRL ENTER. The bounding box is deselected and sizes to fit around the text.

Once you have created a text annotation you can easily edit the text, change its formatting and other options, and move the annotation to another position on the bar chart.
