Adding a user-defined table

You use the Create User Defined Table wizard to create user-defined tables for projects that are stored on the Enterprise server. The wizard is divided into a number of logical stages. At each stage, you can click Next to proceed to the next screen, or Back to return to the previous screen. When you have entered all the required details, click Finish. You can cancel the creation of the new user-defined table at any time by clicking Cancel.

To access the Create User Defined Table wizard, select the User Defined Tables folder of the data source to which you want to add a UDT in the left pane, then select User Defined Tables from the Custom menu, then the Add command.

If you baseline projects from one data source into another and you add a user-defined table to one data source, you must also add it to the data source into which you baseline projects, as both data sources must have the same user-defined table structure.

This Help also applies to the Edit User Defined Table wizard, as the steps involved in editing a user-defined table are identical to those involved in creating a new table.

To add a user-defined table to a data source:

  1. In the left-hand pane, select the data source to which you want to add the user-defined table, then select the User Defined Tables folder. The user-defined tables that have been added to the data source are listed in the right-hand pane.
  2. Select User Defined Tables from the Custom menu, then select the Add command. The Create User Defined Table wizard appears. When you run this wizard for the first time an introductory screen is displayed. You can prevent this from appearing when you create more tables by checking the Skip this introduction next time check box. Click Next to proceed to the first step.
  3. Enter a name under which the table will appear in Asta Powerproject. The table will appear on Asta PowerprojectProperties dialogs on a new tab that uses the name that you enter here, so the name should reflect the use to which the table will be put. For example, if you are going to store security information in the table, call it 'Security'.
  4. Click Next to proceed to the next step.
  5. Select the Asta Powerproject object types to which the user-defined table is to apply. The table will appear on the Properties dialog of the objects you select here. Select 'Perm Resource Skill' if you want to use this table in conjunction with Resource Search to search for permanent resources.
  6. Click Next to proceed to the next step.
  7. A user-defined table comprises a column for each field or user-defined enumerator you place into it. Click Add to add a field to the table. The Add Field dialog appears, in which you specify the field details.
  8. Specify the fields you want to add to the user-defined table. The fields appear in the list as you add them.
  9. Select a field and click Move Up or Move Down to re-order it in the list if required. If you enter a value by mistake, select it and click Delete to remove it from the list, or select it and click Edit to edit its details.
  10. Click Next to proceed to the final step and view a list of the actions that Server Admin will perform as it creates the table.
  11. Click Finish to create the user-defined table.

If you are adding a user-defined table to a type of data source other than direct connection (ADO), the user-defined table creation process is complete. If you are adding a user-defined table to a direct connection data source, a dialog appears asking if you want Server Admin to generate an SQL file that you can run to add the user-defined table to the data source.
  1. Click Yes to create an SQL file, or click No if you do not want to create the SQL file. If you choose not to create an SQL file, you will have to add the user-defined table to the data source manually.
  2. If you choose to create an SQL file, enter a path and file name for the file.
  3. Enter exit at the Enterprise server command prompt to shut down the server.
  4. Execute the SQL file that is output in Query Analyzer to create the user-defined table in the data source.
  5. Restart the Enterprise server.

The user-defined table is listed in the right-hand pane for the selected data source. Once you have created a user-defined table, you can use it to store information about the objects with which it is associated in Asta Powerproject.
