Specifying how objects appear when printed

You can specify the way in which a variety of objects appear when printed, using the main field on the Appearance tab of the Print dialog. The items in the field are divided into a number of groups, in an expandable tree. None of these options are available if you are printing a calendar view.

Specifying legend printing options

Expand the Legends section of the tree and select or clear the following boxes to specify the way in which legends are printed:

  • Baseline - select this check box to print a legend explaining the baselines displayed in the printout, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Calendar exception - select this check box to print a legend explaining the working and non-working exceptions that may be used in the project, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Code library - select this check box to print a legend explaining the codes used in the project, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Histogram - select this check box to print a legend explaining the histograms displayed in the printout, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Link category - select this check box to print a legend explaining the link category codes used in the project, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Progress period - select this check box to print a legend explaining the progress periods used in the project, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Symbol - select this check box to print a legend explaining the symbols such as milestones, constraint flags and float used in the project, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Use code library sort order in legend - select this check box to sort code library entries in the legend according to the sort order that has been assigned to them, or clear it to sort them according to the order in which they appear in the printout.
  • Milestone appearances - select this check box to print a legend explaining the milestone appearances used in the project, or clear it to omit the legend.
  • Use milestone appearances library sort order - select this check box to sort milestone appearances in the legend according to the sort order that has been assigned to them, or clear it to sort them according to the order in which milestones of each appearance appear in the printout.

Use the Legends radio buttons to specify the pages on which legends are printed:

  • Click the Bottom radio button to print a legend at the bottom of the printout. If you are printing a single border around the whole output, the legend is spread across the pages that make up the bottom of the printout. If you are printing one border per page, the legend appears at the bottom of every page.
  • Click the All radio button to print a legend at the bottom of every page of the printout.
  • Click the Relevant radio button to print a legend at the bottom of each page that includes an item that is included in a legend. This provides you with a legend on each page that relates precisely to the items on that page.

You can specify the font with which to print legends by clicking the Font button on this tab of the Print dialog. Alternatively, select the Use spreadsheet font check box to print legends using the default spreadsheet font.

Specifying border printing options

Expand the Border section of the tree, and select or clear the following boxes to specify the way in which borders are printed:

  • Draw beneath chart - select this check box to print any parts of the selected border file that encroach onto the chart area underneath the chart, or clear it to print the border in front of the chart.
  • Trust printer's margins - select this check box if you are printing to PDF and want to print using the full extent of the page as far as possible, or clear this check box if you are printing to a physical printer, in which case Project Viewer will adjust the margins of the output to ensure that it fits onto the printed page within the limitations of the selected printer.

Specifying drawing printing options

Expand the Drawing section of the tree, and select or clear the following boxes to specify the way in which patterns are printed:

  • Use alternative pattern printing - select this check box to print patterns, for example on tasks and allocations, in a different style if you experience problems printing patterns using your printer driver, or clear it if you do not experience any such problems.
  • Use high-resolution patterns - select this check box to print patterns, for example on tasks and allocations, in high-resolution if you experience problems printing patterns using your printer driver, or clear it if you do not experience any such problems.

Specifying bar chart printing options

Expand the Bar chart section of the tree, and select or clear the following boxes to specify the way in which objects in the bar chart are printed:

  • Hide task shadows - select this check box to print tasks without the 3D shadow effect that appears in the bar chart, or clear it to print tasks with the 3D shadow effect that appears on screen.
  • Show background colour - select this check box to print the bar chart with a background colour if one has been applied to it, or clear it to print the bar chart with a white background.
  • Show date shading - select this check box to print the bar chart with any shading between dates that has been applied to it, or clear it to print the bar chart without the date shading.
  • Show standard work shading - select this check box to print the bar chart with any standard work shading that has been applied to it, or clear it to print the bar chart without the standard work shading.
  • Group related lines at page boundaries - select this check box to specify that wherever possible, allocation bars and baseline bars should be printed on the same page as the bar to which they relate, or clear it to specify that page breaks can be inserted at the most suitable point, even if this means that bars may be split from one or more of their associated allocation bars or baseline bars. Even with this check box selected, if a bar has a large number of associated allocation bars or baseline bars, a page break may still appear in the midst of these bars if the alternative would mean a large area of blank page in the resulting printout.
  • Scale bar chart fonts with spreadsheet - select this check box to print the fonts within text annotations and task notes using the same scaling options you apply to spreadsheet fonts, or clear the check box to print them with no scaling.

Specifying spreadsheet printing options

Expand the Spreadsheet section of the tree, and select or clear the following boxes to specify the way in which the spreadsheet is printed:

  • Fit columns to text - select this check box to alter the size of the spreadsheet columns so that the text they contains fits neatly within, or clear it to print the columns at their current size, which may result in some text being truncated.
  • Show 3D effect - select this check box to print the spreadsheet using a 3-dimensional effect, matching the way it appears on screen, or clear it to print the spreadsheet more simply.
  • Show bar shading - select this check box to print alternate spreadsheet shading, matching the way it appears on screen, or clear it to print the spreadsheet more simply.
  • Show task-per-line column - select this check box to print the column that shows whether a task is being displayed in one-task-per-line mode, or clear it to omit this column.

  • Show background colour - select this check box to print histograms with a background colour if one has been applied to them, or clear it to print histograms with a white background.
  • Show date shading - select this check box to print histograms with any shading between dates that has been applied to the bar chart, or clear it to print histograms without the date shading.
  • Scale fonts with spreadsheet - select this check box to print the fonts within histograms using the same scaling options you apply to spreadsheet fonts, or clear the check box to print them with no scaling.

Specifying 4D printing options

If a 3D model or IFC group model is displayed, a number of additional 4D-related print options appear on the Appearance tab of the Print dialog. Expand the 4D section of the tree, and select or clear the following boxes to specify the way in which 3D models and IFC group models are printed:

  • Model background shading. Select this check box to include any background shading that has been applied to the 3D model or IFC group model, or clear the check box to print the 3D model or IFC group model with a clear background.
  • High-resolution model image. Select this check box to print a high-resolution image of the 3D model or IFC group model, or clear the check box to print a lower-resolution image. Selecting this check box may give you a better result if you experience problems when printing 3D models.
  • Show model selection. Select this check box to show any objects that are selected in a 3D model or IFC group model as selected in printouts, or clear the check box to print them as if they were not selected.
