Annotating 3D objects in a 3D model with custom properties
You can annotate 3D objects in 3D models with custom properties. You do this by defining one or more user-defined fields for a 3D model, then recording information in the user-defined fields for each 3D object in the 3D model, using the IFC Properties pane. If you record custom information against 3D objects in a 3D model, you can then create IFC product searches that are based on this custom information. You can annotate site objects with custom properties in the same way as you annotate other 3D objects in a 3D model.

- On the 4D tab, in the Model group, click Custom Properties. The Custom Properties dialog appears, displaying a list of the user-defined fields that have been created.
- Click Add. The Custom Property dialog appears.
- Enter a descriptive name for the user-defined field in the Name field, then click OK to return to the Custom Properties dialog. You must enter a unique name for each user-defined field: the name must not be shared with any other properties that are displayed on the IFC Properties pane.
You can use the Rename button to change the name of user-defined fields if required. - Create more user-defined fields if required, then click Close.
Once you have created a user-defined field, it appears in the IFC Properties pane, in the Custom group. In the illustration below, three user-defined fields have been created: Availability, Tel Number and Known issues:

- Display the IFC Properties pane.
- Within the IFC Properties pane, locate the Custom group of fields.
- Select the 3D object in the 3D model, or the site object, about which you want to record custom properties in the user-defined field.
- Click in the user-defined field and enter the required information.

- On the 4D tab, in the Model group, click Custom Properties. The Custom Properties dialog appears, displaying a list of the user-defined fields that have been created.
- Select the user-defined field that you want to delete, then click Delete.
- Click Close.
If you delete a user-defined field, any information that has been recorded against it is deleted automatically.
User-defined fields and IFC group models
If the IFC Model pane is currently displaying an IFC group model and you have set up user-defined fields for any of the individual 3D models in the IFC group model, the user-defined fields for all of the 3D models are displayed in the IFC Properties pane, but you cannot edit them; you need to open the 3D models individually in order to edit their user-defined fields.
