Notes on expanded tasks, summary tasks and hammocks

Please note the following when working with expanded tasks, summary tasks and hammocks:

  • You can draw a link to or from the start of an expanded task or summary task, and from, but not to, the end of an expanded task or summary task. You cannot draw a link to a hammock but you can draw a link from a hammock to another task not within the hammock.
  • Summary tasks, expanded tasks and hammocks cannot be milestones but they can have zero durations. For example, a summary task summarising one milestone will have a duration of zero.
  • You can assign costs, resources, calendars and codes to expanded tasks, summary tasks and hammocks. The calendar on a parent task can affect resource allocations on the parent task if they have been set to use the task calendar, and can affect subordinate tasks if they have been set to use the parent calendar.
  • When executing a histogram, if any expanded tasks, summary tasks or hammocks are included in the view, information on these tasks is included in the histogram, but the histogram generator ensures that no double-counting occurs.
  • You can only assign progress to expanded tasks, summary tasks and hammocks by selecting them then clicking the Enter Progress dropdown in the Progress group on the Home tab, selecting Progress Up To then selecting the date up to which you want to progress them. When you mark progress on an expanded task, summary task or hammock, the progress you mark is reflected on the child tasks. When you mark progress on tasks in a subchart or summary group or within a hammock, the progress you mark on the individual tasks is reflected on the parent task.
  • The expanded/contracted state of expanded tasks, summary tasks and hammocks is stored on a per user basis, so when you reopen a project you are in the same position in the hierarchy as when you last worked on the project.
