Introduction to archiving

If you use Asta Enterprise, you can archive historic data from live projects into archive files. Archiving historic data provides you with the following benefits:

Once archived, historic data is located in a more secure, infrequently-accessed location, so there is less chance of it being edited or deleted accidentally.
Unwanted and/or outdated data is removed from your live projects.
The size of your live projects and data sources is kept to a manageable level, resulting in speedier performance.

You use a separate application, Archive Manager, to archive data from projects. Archive Manager has its own online Help, which explains in full how to archive and restore data.

A project can have more than one archive. You may, for example, want to create a single archive for a project, and update it each time you archive data. Alternatively, you may want to create a different archive each time you archive data. Archives can be located in a different data source to the corresponding projects, provided that each archive is located on the same Enterprise server as the project.

When you archive data from a project, data from any baselines that are associated with a project is archived into a separate baseline archive. As with project archives, baseline archives can be located in a different data source to the corresponding baseline, provided that each baseline archive is located on the same Enterprise server as the baseline.

Within each project, you can specify which users are able to archive and restore data. By default, the top-level user within each project has the right to archive and restore. The top-level user can grant this right to other subordinate users within a project if required.

Once you have archived data from a project, you can open the archive in Asta Powerproject as if it were a project to view the information that it contains.

Data that has been archived from a project can be restored into the project from which it was originally archived. Similarly, data that has been archived from baselines can be restored into the baseline from which it was originally archived. When you restore data from an archive into a project or baseline, the data is restored into its original location within the project whenever possible. If this is not possible for any reason, the data is restored into the project as a 'displaced item'.
