If you select several lines with different formatting, for example, different background colours, the style bar controls of the differing attributes appear crossed-out, but you can still make selections from them. Any selections you make will apply to all selected lines. - Use the style bar controls to format the selected line(s).
To change the default formatting settings for new items, rather than for selected items, deselect any currently-selected items, then choose the settings you want using the style bar controls. The settings apply to all new items you draw.
