Associating IFC files with projects

Before you can build a project schedule from one or more IFC files, you must create a project in Powerproject BIM then specify which IFC files you are going to use within the project. Each IFC file can be used with more than one project in an Powerproject BIM file, and you can use more than one IFC file with each project.

The IFC files can be stored either locally or in the Elecosoft BIMCloud®. When you specify that an IFC file is to be used within a project in Powerproject BIM, an IFC model object is created for the IFC file in Library Explorer and the IFC file becomes known as an IFC model. There is a one-to-one relationship between IFC files and IFC models in Library Explorer: you can only have one IFC model in Library Explorer for each IFC file. You can edit IFC models in Library Explorer to specify override colours that should be used to display different types of object in the corresponding IFC file and to specify the way in which tasks are treated when a timeline simulation is run.

Once you have associated an IFC file with a project, the corresponding IFC model is opened automatically when you open the project in Powerproject BIM. A Disable IFC model loading check box is present on the Open tab of the Backstage view. You can use this check box to open projects without opening their associated IFC models or IFC group models. Projects open more quickly when they are opened without their associated IFC models or IFC group models, so you may want to do this if you want to work with a Powerproject BIM project without the need to work with its associated IFC model.

Note that associating an IFC file with a project does not automatically open that IFC file in Powerproject BIM; you need to open IFC files manually, by opening the associated IFC model.

Working with related IFC models

If you have a group of IFC models that are associated with each other, you can link them together using IFC group models. This may be useful if you have a separate IFC model for each discipline in a project and you want to be able to work with all of the related IFC models together at the same time. If you link a number of related IFC models together, you can open them all at the same time by opening the IFC group model and they appear at the same time, overlaid, in the IFC Model and IFC Comparison Model panes. You can also use IFC group models to add site objects, such as cranes, portacabins, security fences, scaffolding, parked cars, etc, to IFC models to give a better visual representation of how a site will appear at various stages of a project. Site objects exist as individual IFC files; you add them to an IFC model by creating an IFC group model and adding the site object to the IFC group model.

Dealing with IFC files that cannot be found

In some circumstances, Powerproject BIM may not be able to locate an IFC file that you are working with. For example, this may happen if the IFC file has been deleted accidentally, or if the project or IFC file has been moved to a different location. If this is the case, a message is displayed to inform you that the IFC file may have been deleted.

Once you have located the missing IFC file, you must re-associate the IFC file with its corresponding IFC model Library Explorer object.
