Colour-coding tasks using the appearance of their assigned resources

You can use the project view to colour-code tasks in the bar chart using the appearance of the permanent or consumable resources that have been assigned to them. Colour-coding tasks by resource is a good way of identifying the resources that have been assigned to tasks without having to display resource allocation bars in the bar chart.

To specify which resources to use to colour tasks:

  1. In the project view, locate the permanent or consumable resource that you want to use to colour tasks. You can colour tasks according to individual resources, or resource folders.
  2. Right-click the resource or resource folder and select Display Resource from the menu that appears.

Note that selecting a resource folder does not automatically select the resources within the folder; selecting a resource folder means that the appearance of the resource folder itself will be used to colour any tasks to which the resource folder has been assigned.
  3. Repeat the above steps to select additional resources and resource folders for display if required.

The resources and resource folders that are currently used to colour tasks have a tick against the Display Resource command on the menu that appears when you right-click them in the project view.

You can use more than one resource and/or resource folder at a time to colour tasks. If you do this, you need to specify the order in which the resources and resource folders are used to colour tasks. To do this:

  1. In the project view, right-click a resource or resource folder and select Multiple Display Resources from the menu that appears. The Multiple Display Resources dialog appears.

The resources and resource folders that are selected for display appear in a list in the Show resources in this order field. Resources at the top of the list take priority over those lower down the list. If a task is assigned more than one of the selected resources or resource folders, its appearance is taken from the resource or resource folder that appears nearest the top of this list.
  2. Add more resources and resource folders to the Show resources in this order field if required by selecting the check boxes in the Available resources field. You can remove resources and resource folders from the Show resources in this order field by clearing their check boxes in the Available resources field.
  3. Determine the order in which resources and resource folders are used to colour tasks by selecting them in the Show resources in this order field and clicking Up or Down to move them up or down in the list.
  4. Click OK.

As an alternative to colour-coding tasks using resources and resource libraries, you can choose to colour-code them using the appearance of the codes that have been assigned to them.
