Reverting to a baseline

Once you have baselined a project, you can choose to revert your project to the state it was in when it was baselined. For example:

  • If, as your project progresses, you make changes to your project then later wish that you had not made them, you can revert to the baseline to restore the project to the state it was in before you made the edits.
  • When planning a project, you might create one standard plan then experiment with several other 'what if' scenarios and baseline each scenario for your records. If you decide that you want to adopt one of these scenarios as the project plan, you can revert the project to that baseline.

You can choose to revert the whole project to the baseline, only objects that have been edited or deleted, only objects that have been deleted or only the objects currently selected in the bar chart. An object is any item within a project, such as bars, tasks, resources, calendars, codes and histograms.

Reverting to a baseline cannot be undone and it clears the undo list so that previous actions cannot be undone either.

To revert a project to a baseline:

  1. On the Project tab, in the Properties group, click Baseline Manager. The Baseline/What If Manager appears.
  2. Select the baseline to which you want to revert the project, then click Revert To.
  3. From the Revert Options group, select:
    • Restore deleted objects to revert to the baseline only for objects that have been deleted from the project.
    • Restore deleted and changed objects to revert to the baseline only for objects that have been deleted from, or edited within, the project.
    • Restore selected objects to revert to the baseline only for objects currently selected in the bar chart.
    • Overwrite to revert the whole project to the baseline.
  4. Click Apply or Close to revert to the baseline.

After a few moments, the project is reverted to the selected baseline and the baseline remains displayed. Turn off the baseline to resume work on the project. The baseline is retained so that you can still refer to it and use it for comparison with the project as it progresses.
