Permanent Allocation Properties dialog - Nonlinear Allocation tab
You use the Nonlinear Allocation tab of the Permanent Allocation Properties dialog to specify whether the effort and allocation values of the selected permanent resource allocation are constant throughout the duration of the allocation, or whether they vary, being calculated using either an individual profile or a resource curve. If you want to apply an individual profile to an allocation, you define the profile using the grid on this tab; if you want to assign a resource curve to an allocation, you select the resource curve on this tab.

To access the Permanent Allocation Properties dialog, right-click a permanent resource allocation and select Properties.

Field | Description |
---|---|
Linear | Click this radio button to specify that the allocation is flat - linear - ie that allocation and effort values remain constant throughout the duration of the allocation. |
Profile | Click this radio button to specify that allocation and effort values for the allocation are not constant throughout the duration of the allocation, but are calculated using an individual profile that is built up using the values that you enter in the grid on this tab. |
Resource curve |
Click this radio button to specify that the allocation and effort values for the allocation are not constant throughout the duration of the allocation, but are calculated using a resource curve.
Select the resource curve to apply to the allocation in the field to the right of the radio button; click |
Create curve from profile | Click this button if you have defined an individual profile for this allocation and you want to save it as a resource curve, to enable you to apply it to other allocations. |
Display period |
Specify whether the grid on this tab should display effort and allocation values for each week, day, half day or hour throughout the duration of the allocation.
For linear allocations, the figures in the Effort and Allocation columns will be the same for each row; for allocations that use an individual profile or a resource curve, these figures will differ according to the way in which the individual profile or resource curve has been configured. |
Detail grid - Period | The start date and time of each week, day, half day or hour throughout the duration of the allocation. |
Detail grid - Effort | The amount of effort (in hours) for each period throughout the duration of the allocation. For allocations that use an individual profile, you can edit this value to specify the amount of effort for each period, at which point the Allocation value is calculated automatically. |
Detail grid - Allocation | The allocation value for each period throughout the duration of the allocation. For allocations that use an individual profile, this value is calculated automatically when you specify the amount of effort for each period in the Effort column. |
How do I...

Click the Linear radio button. The figures in the Effort and Allocation columns in the grid on this tab display the same value for each row.

- Click the Profile radio button.
- Select the time period that you want to use when building up the individual profile in the Display period field. You can specify effort values per hour, per half day, per day or per week. A row is displayed in the grid on this tab for each time period throughout the duration of the allocation.
- For each row in the grid on this tab, enter the amount of effort, in hours, that you think will be expended in the corresponding period. For example, for a front-loaded profile, the effort values in the earlier time periods will be greater than in the later time periods. The Allocation value in each row is calculated automatically.

- Click the Resource curve radio button.
- Select the resource curve to apply to the allocation in the field to the right of the radio button. The figures in the Effort and Allocation columns in the grid on this tab differ according to the way in which the resource curve has been configured.
Select a different time period in the Display period field to display values for a different time period as required.

- Click the Profile radio button.
- Click Create curve from profile. The Create Resource Curve from Profile dialog appears.
- Enter a name to apply to the resource curve in the Name field and click OK.
The individual profile is saved as a resource curve, which you can now apply to other allocations.
