Histogram Report Properties dialog - Graphs tab
You use the Graphs tab of the Histogram Report Properties dialog to specify the graphs to include in the selected histogram report and the way in which each graph is displayed.

To access the Histogram Report Properties dialog, either:
- Right-click an open histogram and select Histogram Report Properties.
- Click Edit or New on the Details tab of the Format Histogram dialog.
- Right-click a histogram report in Library Explorer and select Properties.
- Click
on the Histogram toolbar.

The dialog displays the following information about each graph that you select in the grid on the left of the dialog:
Field | Description |
---|---|
Legend name | Enter a description of the graph, to be displayed in the legend. |
Filter | Select a filter if you want to apply a particular filter to the graph to limit the information it contains. To apply whichever filter is applied to the current view at the time at which the histogram is generated, select View Filter. If you do this, the filter that is applied to the graph is changed automatically whenever a different filter is applied to the current view. |
Data | Select a baseline if you want to graph data from a baseline rather than from the live data. Select Current Baseline to graph data from the baseline that is defined as being current. If you have associated different baselines with individual projects in a portfolio, you can graph information from the project baselines by selecting Project Baseline. |
Complete option | Specify whether you want the graph to include only completed tasks, only uncompleted tasks, or all tasks regardless of their progress. |
Scope | Specify the scope of the data being graphed. For example, you can choose to graph only information from the current branch of the project, or only information from the current view. |
Currency unit | Select the currency unit in which you want to display monetary values (in the legend and the grid if you are displaying them); select None to display monetary values in the default currency unit. |
Area |
Click this radio button to display an area graph, in which the area graphed indicates the amounts being graphed. Specify the appearance of the graph in the fields to the right.
|
Line |
Click this radio button to display a line graph, in which a line indicates the amounts being graphed. Specify the type of line in the field to the right.
|
Use resource/cost centre/standard work appearance |
Select this check box to display the graph using the defined appearance of the resource(s), cost centre(s) or standard work type(s) being graphed, or clear the check box to display the graph using the selectors to the right of the Area or Line radio buttons.
This check box has no effect if you are graphing task work rather than resource or cost centre information. |
Include in data-grid | Select this check box to include the values from this graph in the data grid that you can display below each histogram row, or clear the check box to exclude the values from this graph from the grid. |
Allow stacking |
Select this check box if you want the graph to be able to appear on top of another graph, or clear the check box if you want it to appear on the same level.
Stacking graphs takes up more space on the screen, but prevents graphs from obscuring one another. The way in which graphs are stacked depends on the stacking option you select on the Row tab of the Format Histogram dialog.
|
Automatic | Click this radio button to apply an automatic scale multiplier to the graph if you have chosen to limit the y-axis to a fixed range, using the Row tab of the Format Histogram dialog. |
Fixed |
Click this radio button to apply a scale multiplier of your choice to the graph if you have chosen to limit the y-axis to a fixed range, then enter the scale multiplier in the field to the right.
For example, if the values in a histogram go up to 100,000 and you limit the y-axis range from 0 to 100, you could apply a scale multiplier of 1,000, in which case the histogram values would be described as 'x 1000' in the axis and legend. |
The dialog displays the following buttons:
Button | Description |
---|---|
Add | Click this button to add a new graph to the histogram. |
Remove | Click this button to delete the selected graph. |
Up | Click this button to move the selected graph up one position in the drawing order. The first graph in the list is drawn first and may be obscured by graphs lower down the list that are drawn later. |
Down | Click this button to move the selected graph down one position in the drawing order. |
How do I...

- Click Add. A graph is added to the first blank line of the grid on the left of the dialog.
- Select the graph type in the Graph name column.
- Enter a description of the graph, to be displayed in the legend, in the Legend name field.
- Select a filter in the Filter field if you want to apply a particular filter to the graph. To apply whichever filter is applied to the current view at the time at which the histogram is generated, select View Filter. If you do this, the filter that is applied to the graph is changed automatically whenever a different filter is applied to the current view.
- Select a baseline in the Data field if you want to graph data from a baseline rather than from the live data. Select Current Baseline to graph data from the baseline that is defined as being current. If you have associated different baselines with individual projects in a portfolio, you can graph information from the project baselines by selecting Project Baseline.
- Specify whether you want the graph to include only completed tasks, only uncompleted tasks, or all tasks regardless of their progress, in the Complete option field.
- Specify the scope of the data being graphed in the Scope field.
- Select the currency unit in which you want to display monetary values (in the legend and the grid if you are displaying them) in the Currency unit field; Select None to display monetary values in the default currency unit.
- Click the Area radio button to display an area graph, in which the area graphed indicates the amounts being graphed, or click the Line radio button to display a line graph, in which a line indicates the amounts being graphed. Specify the appearance of the graph using the fields to the right of these radio buttons.
- Select the Use resource/cost centre/standard work appearance check box to display the graph using the defined appearance of the resource(s), cost centre(s) or standard work type being graphed, or clear the check box to display the graph using the selectors to the right of the Area or Line radio buttons.
When graphing standard work, this check box only affects graphs that include a single type of standard work; graphs that include more than one type of standard work cannot display the appearance of multiple standard work types.
This check box has no effect if you are graphing task work rather than resource or cost centre information. - You can display a grid at the bottom of each histogram row that shows the numerical value of each slice in the histogram. If you are displaying a data grid, select the Include in data-grid check box to include the values from this graph in the data grid, or clear the check box to exclude them.
- Select the Allow stacking check box if you want the graph to be able to appear on top of another graph, or clear the check box if you want it to appear on the same level.
- You can specify a fixed range to the y-axis of a histogram if required, using the Row tab of the Format Histogram dialog. For example, if the values in a histogram go up to 100,000, you could limit the y-axis range from 0 to 100, in which case the histogram values would be described as 'x 1000' in the axis and legend. Limiting the y-axis in this way often results in a neater histogram when larger figures are involved. When you limit the y-axis, a suitable scale multiplier is chosen automatically for you if you select the Automatic radio button against the Scale multiplier field - for example, 'x 1000' or 'x 100'. However, you can select a fixed scale multiplier for each graph if you wish. If you want to do this, select the Fixed radio button against the Scale multiplier field and enter the scale multiplier you want to use in the field to the right.

- Select the graph you want to remove.
- Click Remove.

- Select the graph you want to configure.
- Click Up to move the graph towards the top of the list, or click Down to move it towards the bottom. Graphs at the top of the list are drawn first, so may be obscured by ones drawn subsequently on top of them.
