Specifying the format of a tabular report

You can output tabular reports to a printer or directly to a variety of file formats. You can also output tabular reports to the Windows® Clipboard (in CSV format), from where you can paste them into another application.

You can specify the format of a tabular report using the Output tab of the Tabular Report Properties dialog, or using the Tabular Report Wizard, as part of the tabular report creation process.

Select one or more of the following check boxes to specify the report format:

  • Printer - to send the report directly to a printer.
  • HTML file - to output the report to an HTML file with a path and name you specify. HTML reports are produced using the XSL stylesheet you specify.
  • Clipboard - to output the report to the Windows Clipboard in CSV format, from where you can subsequently paste it into another application. Reports are transferred into CSV format for the Windows Clipboard using the CLIPBOARD.XSL file that is stored in the folder specified against Tabular report styles on the File Locations tab of the Options dialog.
  • XSL transform - to output the report to an XSL file with a path and name you specify, using an XSL stylesheet you specify.
  • CSV file - to output the report to a CSV file with a path and name you specify. Reports are transferred into CSV format using the CSV.XSL file that is stored in the folder specified against Tabular report styles on the File Locations tab of the Options dialog.
  • XML file - to output the report to an XML file with a path and name you specify.
  • Excel - to open the report in Microsoft Excel® in a new XLS file, or if you specify a path and name in the Excel output field, to output the report to a specific XLS file without opening it. You can also specify a Microsoft Excel template file to use when creating the XLS file, and specify which worksheet number you want to be updated with the tabular report information. Specifying a worksheet number may be useful if you want to update a single XLS file with information from more than one tabular report: you can specify the same XLS file but a different worksheet number for each report. If you specify an existing XLS file, all existing data in the specified worksheet is deleted, and the tabular report is pasted into this worksheet. Any formatting in the existing file is retained. If you specify an existing XLS file, you must ensure that the file is not open when you execute the tabular report, or the output will fail.

Depending on the format(s) you select for a tabular report, you can specify a number of additional output options that affect the format of the report.
