Viewing the tasks at a particular point on a graph

You can quickly see which tasks are contributing to a graph at a particular point. For example, if you have a graph showing over-allocation, you might want to see which tasks are contributing towards the over-allocation on a particular date.

To view the tasks contributing to a graph at a particular point:

  1. Place the mouse pointer over the graph at the point or on the date in which you are interested.
  2. Right-click, select the Show Tasks submenu, then select one of the following menu commands:
    • In this Slice - to view the tasks that contribute to the graph within the slicing period in which you right-clicked. For example, If the histogram has a slicing period of weeks, the tasks that contribute to the graph during the week in which you right-clicked will be included. For non-sliced histograms, those tasks that fall within the period of the data grid in which you right-clicked are included - even if the data grid is not currently displayed.
    • In this Day - to view the tasks that contribute to the graph within the day in which you right-clicked.
    • At this Instant - to view the tasks that contribute to the graph at the precise point in time at which you right-clicked. The "precise point in time" is taken to be a time period that extends to a single pixel either side of the right-click position, so the number of tasks that are included when this option is selected will depend on the current scale of the bar chart.

The tasks contributing to the graph are displayed in a new bar chart window, which itself displays a copy of the original histogram. Note that if a histogram is displaying more than one graph at the same time, the tasks that contribute to all of the graphs at that point are displayed.

You can edit the tasks in this window in the same way that you edit tasks in any other bar chart view. You can specify which view is used to display the tasks by selecting a view from the Histogram Show Tasks View field on the View tab of the Options dialog.

You might find the Show Tasks command useful if you want to level consumable resources.
