Specifying where new tasks inherit their attributes from

You can specify whether newly-inserted tasks inherit the following attributes from a neighbouring task, or whether they should inherit the attributes from the global bar chart defaults that have been defined in a project:

  • Code library assignments.
  • Calendar.
  • Whether or not the tasks use the calendar of their parent tasks.

If you specify that new tasks should inherit these attributes from a neighbouring task, they also inherit the neighbouring task's WBS code. If you specify that new tasks should inherit these attributes from the global bar chart defaults, they do not inherit a WBS code from anywhere.

To specify where new tasks should inherit the above attributes from:

  1. Click the File tab, then click Options. The Options dialog appears.
  2. Click the Edit tab.
  3. Select the Inherit attributes from neighbouring task check box to specify that new tasks should inherit code library assignments, calendar and the 'use parent calendar' setting, plus the WBS code, from a neighbouring task where possible, or clear the check box to specify that new tasks should inherit these settings (except the WBS code) from the default settings that have been defined on the Task tab of the Bar Chart Defaults Properties dialog.
  4. Click OK.

This setting affects both tasks that you insert into a project by drawing in the bar chart or typing in the spreadsheet, and tasks that you paste into the project having first copied them from another application. The setting does not affect tasks that are cut or copied from a project and subsequently pasted into the same project in a different location.

Specifying that tasks should inherit these attributes from a neighbouring task may prove useful in situations where tasks in different sections of a project tend to share these attributes with other tasks in the vicinity; specifying that tasks should inherit attributes from the global bar chart default settings may prove useful in situations where all tasks in a project tend to share the same attributes.
